SR 164 - Pussyfoot Creek Fish Passage
Project type
Transportation and Habitat Restoration
Date
2021
Location
Auburn
This project built a bridge for SR 164 over Pussyfoot Creek on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation east of Auburn.
The old 11-foot-wide culvert that carried Pussyfoot Creek under SR 164 had large rocks and debris inside that channeled the water too quickly for migratory and resident fish to continue upstream. This project built a 170-foot-long bridge, then removed the culvert and built a more natural creek bed. This allows coho salmon, steelhead, coastal cutthroat trout and resident fish to more easily move up and downstream. Opening up an additional 9.3 miles of breeding habitat will help increase the number of salmon hatched in the creek, which feeds into the White River and eventually Puget Sound. More salmon reaching Puget Sound will help the ecosystem in many ways including providing more food for orcas.
